Inspired by infinity and symmetry 

Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898–1972) gained worldwide fame with his intriguing drawings of impossible worlds, visual illusions, and mathematical perfection. What makes Escher unique is his fascination with repetition, symmetry, and infinite patterns. He drew inspiration from Moorish art, in which geometric divisions of space play a central role. 

Where the Moors used abstract forms, Escher added his own twist by applying recognizable motifs: birds, fish, reptiles—figures that seem to interlock endlessly without overlapping. These so-called regular plane fillings form the basis for many of his iconic works and for the designs in our Escher collection.
