La Passeggiata As evening falls and the harsh sun inches out of your favorite piazza, an evening ritual begins, the Italian tradition of passeggiata, a gentle stroll through the main streets of the old town. Italians tend to dress up for la passeggiata. Older folks sit along the route, nursing a glass of wine on the terrace and watching for things to gossip about; la passeggiata is where new romances are on display as well as new outfits.
Wear ties from La Passeggiata and become part of a passeggiata whether you intend to or not. You’ll feel like less of an outsider if you dress up a little. Walk slowly. Stop for a gelato or an aperitivo. And don’t be surprised if, after a while, you start feeling that you too belong.
Necktie - silk A stain, now what? Before you start cleaning the stain on your necktie, please check the narrow end of the tie. There should be a black label indicating whether the necktie is made of silk or polyester.
Is your necktie made of silk? In that case, do not wash it in the washing machine or lukewarm soapy water. Instead, use petroleum ether to treat stains on a silk necktie. Apply a small amount of petroleum ether to a clean cloth and gently dab against the stain. The petroleum ether will absorb the stain. Attention! Do not rub! Is the stain still there? Then roll up your tie and place it in a jar with some petroleum ether. Put a lid on the jar and shake. Leave the tie to soak for about a day. Take out the tie and hang it outside to air and dry, hanging it from the tip (narrowest point) of the tie. This way, the petroleum ether will evaporate and your tie will dry without any creases.
Would you like to iron your necktie? Use the lowest setting on your iron and cover the tie with a tea towel, to prevent the silk from melting. Do not iron over the passantino (loop at the back) to prevent shine stains on the front of the tie.
Have these instructions not helped? You can take your tie to the dry cleaner’s to have it professionally cleaned. Please note that steaming is not good for silk ties, but it will survive one dry cleaning session.
